Peak kitesurf season runs from May to September, but you can ride here all year round.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We live ten minutes from this beach, and we still get excited every time the Nortada kicks in after lunch. Parking is free, a 300-metre walk from the sand. Next to the parking you&#8217;ll find changing rooms, showers and toilets. During the season, lifeguards with boats patrol the beach \u2014 and they know how to deal with kitesurfers. If something goes wrong, they&#8217;ll come by to check on you. And yes, this service is also free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Watersports at Praia do Cabedelo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The rhythm here is simple. Mornings are usually wind-still: perfect for yoga at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpc-viana.com\/center\">Duotone Pro Center<\/a>, a surf session or some SUP on the flat water. After lunch, the thermal wind arrives and the kiters take over. You can rent all your gear at Duotone Pro Center, right on the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the wind conditions at Praia do Cabedelo?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Peak kitesurf season is May to September, but it&#8217;s possible to kite here all year round. In summer it&#8217;s windy every single day, with speeds of up to 35 knots. The dominant wind is NW, side-onshore \u2014 the best direction you can wish for. Locals call it the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nortada\">Nortada<\/a>, which literally translates as &#8220;strong north wind&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cabedelo is a half-moon-shaped bay, so if you get into trouble, you&#8217;ll wash ashore within minutes. If you want waves, head about 2 km out, past the end of the breakwater, where the Atlantic swell rolls in. In Portugal, strong swell comes with the package: smaller and friendlier in summer (great for beginners), more powerful in autumn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Praia do Cabedelo good for beginners?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes. The flat water inside the bay, the side-onshore wind, the half-moon shape of the beach and the lifeguards make it one of the safer spots on the Portuguese coast to learn. Summer is the best time for beginners: steady wind, smaller waves, and lessons and rental gear available at Duotone Pro Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are there rules on the beach?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not many. When it&#8217;s crowded, the lifeguards sometimes mark a launch area for kiters and a separate zone for swimmers with yellow flags. If you miss it, they&#8217;ll let you know with a whistle. Otherwise you can kite everywhere \u2014 even all the way to the next beach, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/dir\/\/Praia+Rodanho\/data=!4m6!4m5!1m1!4e2!1m2!1m1!1s0xd25b60f787bb817:0xadcbb702ef9abbab?sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwilwtq-ncv3AhWD_qQKHaQkDKIQ9Rd6BAg3EAQ\">Praia Rodanho<\/a>, where the wind is usually stronger, the waves bigger and the beach even quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important warnings at Praia do Cabedelo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 1 km from the beach entrance, on your left, there are a few rocks on the beach and in the water. Don&#8217;t say hello to them. Apart from that, there&#8217;s more than enough space to set up your gear and nothing in the water to look out for. The water is cold, though \u2014 wear a wetsuit of at least 3\/4. Water shoes are not necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take the ferry to the beach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No car? Or just in for a nice boat trip? Take the ferry from the pier south of the town centre \u2014 one euro, a short but lovely crossing, and you arrive right at the beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where to eat at Praia do Cabedelo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Portugal is famous for its food, so you&#8217;re in for a treat. Our favourites:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpc-viana.com\/center\">Duotone Pro Center<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 our personal lunch favourite. In summer they open the beachside terrace for beers and ice cream after your session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/aquario.restaurante.bar\">Aqu\u00e1rio Bar<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 our go-to for the evening. Recently restyled, and the food is amazing. You&#8217;ll find it next to the parking area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/feelviana.com\/en\/beach-bar\">FeelViana Beach Bar<\/a><\/strong> \u2014 right on the beach with a great view over the Atlantic.
