Viana do Castelo is one of the best places in Northern Portugal for mountain biking. With both the ocean and the mountains nearby, this region is unique. In autumn the weather becomes milder: cooler, but still sunny enough for long rides. Perfect for anyone who loves adventure on two wheels.

Mountain bike routes in Viana do Castelo

Around Viana do Castelo you will find dozens of mountain bike routes, most of them between 40 and 60 kilometers. The variety is huge: technical single tracks, climbs through green forests, fast downhills with ocean views, and quiet trails along valleys and rivers.

If you are less trained or simply want to make things easier, renting an e-mountain bike in Portugal is a great idea. In Viana you can find several shops with high-quality e-MTBs. They make long rides and climbs much more enjoyable.

Guided or self-guided

You can ride on your own, but there are also local organizations that offer guided mountain bike tours. This is perfect if you are new to the area and don’t want to miss the best spots. For downhill lovers, there are trips where a shuttle takes you up the mountain, so you only have to enjoy the ride down.

Unique nature and surroundings

  • Monte de Santa Luzia: just behind the city you’ll find wild horses, something rare in Portugal.
  • Gerês National Park: a bit further away, but a classic for mountain bikers with rough terrain and deep valleys.
  • Waterfalls and forests near Viana: routes along rivers, quiet trails and hidden viewpoints.
