Praia do Cabedelo, near Viana do Castelo, is one of the best places in Northern Portugal to learn to surf or kitesurf. It has steady thermal wind through the summer, a long sandy beach with no awkward obstacles, flat sheltered water at the northern end for first lessons, and proper waves further south. Several schools sit along the same stretch of sand, so wherever you start, help is close by. Here is why it works for beginners, where the schools are, and how to choose.

Why Cabedelo is a good place to learn

A few things come together here that make learning easier than at most spots. The wind is reliable and predictable. The Nortada is a thermal wind, so it tends to build gently through the afternoon rather than arriving in sudden gusts, which is exactly what you want when you are starting out. You can read how it works in our guide to the Nortada wind.

The water suits beginners. At the northern end of Cabedelo, a long sea wall shelters the river mouth and leaves a patch of glassy, flat water. It is calm, forgiving and ideal for a first kitesurf lesson or for finding your feet on a foil. A little further south at Rodanho, the Atlantic swell rolls in, which is where you head to learn to surf or to progress onto waves. And it is a safe, open beach. The wind blows onshore, the sand is wide, and there are no major hazards, so learners have plenty of room.

The schools along the beach

Four spots run along roughly two kilometres of sand, from Cabedelo in the north to Rodanho in the south.

Modo Experto School (Rodanho). We work directly with Modo Experto at the southern end of the beach. It is a friendly, multilingual school that teaches kitesurf, surf, SUP and wingfoil to every level, from first-timers to riders chasing waves. It is where we send most of our guests, and you can find them at modoexpertoschool.com.

Duotone Pro Center (northern end). Right by the flat, sheltered water, the Duotone Pro Center runs kitesurf, windsurf, SUP and surf lessons, with hire, board testing and gear storage a few steps from the sea. The calm water on its doorstep makes it a natural place for a first kitesurf lesson.

Kitesurf Fit Pro School. In the middle of the beach, Kitesurf Fit Pro School runs kitesurf lessons on the same steady afternoon wind.

North Beach Bar at Feel Viana. More the beach club and social heart of Cabedelo than a school, this is a good place to refuel between sessions, and the wider Feel Viana centre is where you can arrange other watersports and rentals.

Surf or kitesurf: which should you start with?

It partly depends on the season. Surfing works nearly all year, with the best conditions along this coast from autumn through spring, when the swell is bigger. Kitesurfing follows the wind, so it is at its best from May to mid-October. If you are visiting in high summer, a calm morning surf and a windy afternoon kite session is a lovely way to spend a day.

Whichever you choose, most people start on the flat water at the northern end and move to the waves at Rodanho as they gain confidence. For a full month-by-month picture of the wind and water, see our guide to the best time to kitesurf at Cabedelo.

What should you bring?

Not much. The schools provide the boards, kites and wetsuits you need for a lesson. The Atlantic here stays cool all year, so you will always be in a wetsuit, a 3/2 in summer and a 4/3 in the cooler months. Beyond that, bring sun cream, water and a warm layer for afterwards.

Where to stay

We built Yuna a few minutes from the beach, on a hillside with a view over the Atlantic, as an easy base for a learning trip. Yuna One has a private saltwater pool and sleeps up to six, and Yuna Two has a private garden and an outdoor Gardentub. Both are close enough to be on the water for the afternoon wind, and restful enough to recover between sessions. You can book either one directly with us.
